The Scavenger of Dreams – Flys high!!!

Writer Director Suman Ghosh’s The Scavenger of Dreams gives us a human story of the waste collector, almost a family job. They delve into the stark contrasts and inequalities within a city like Calcutta, focusing on a family of waste collectors who live on the margins of society but have a unique connection to the affluent through the items they salvage, aspiring their small dreams. Finding happiness in the little details and pain in the ignorance of the rich.

The film portrays the daily struggles of a family engaged in waste collection in Calcutta, Shardul Bharadwaj plays the lead character of Birju and his wife’s role is played by Sudipta Chakraborty their chemistry is believable and struggle of the couple reflects on screen, making it an immersive experience.

The director succeeds to showcase us their daily chores, daily struggles and their daily findings of happiness in the little crumbs thrashed by the rich. The film employs a blend of realism and poetic imagery to convey its message, capturing both the harsh realities of the family’s existence and the beauty in their resilience and creativity.

Their interaction with discarded items, which they bring home for their daughter’s bedtime stories, serves as a poignant metaphor for their connection with the wealthier strata of society despite their economic disparity. Through the lens of this family, the film offers a critique of societal inequalities and the widening gap between different socioeconomic classes. It underscores how even in the most dire circumstances, human connections and aspirations persist, albeit in unconventional forms.

The film is set in the era, where world is just emerging out of the pandemic and their daughter has just restarted going to the school. Since they had no means to attend the online school during Covid, such nuances are well captured to showcase the impact the underprivileged had. Birju and Shona form a great pair, their banter, their chemistry, love for the daughter all is well captured.

The conflict in Birju’s job arises with his reservation to switch over to the electronic vehicle to collect the waste. It brings the first disruption and second disruption comes from an incident where the rich is negligent and Birju gets hurt with a broken glass. This leads to a quarrel that brings Birju, a termination at job.

The Scavengers of Dreams not only tells a compelling story of survival and adaptation but also prompts reflection on broader societal issues and human connections across socioeconomic divides. It serves as a powerful exploration of social justice issues, offering a humanizing perspective on communities often overlooked or stigmatized. The film acts as a mirror in the times we live in. Birju and Shona despite of their living strata, dream big and their pursuit to fly high doesn’t end.
