Jayant Somalkar in his first film surprises us with his art of lens giving us a story to relate to, have seen or heard in the current century too. An Indian story that may be fictional for the medium made, but it resonates with many true stories of rural India. Sthal is one such story where the Father yearns to get his daughter married, finding a suitable alliance. Director succeeds to capture the ordeal, keeping it subtly entertaining and never losing the crux of the story, offering us a rich tapestry of themes and characters.

Sthal is set in a quaint village nestled in the heart of rural Maharashtra, Dongargoan.  A story of not just one Savita, indeed many such Savita’s who have been through the patriarchal lens. Savita is young, sensitive, a college going student, studying sociology, preparing her entrance and is ambitious for a job too. She is weighed down by societal pressures where Marriage alliance becomes the top-most thing by her family, she keeps entertaining guests coming at her place in pursuit of finding an alliance. Family is trying to meet ends with their  cotton farming business and are in limited capacity to offer dowry. She is being helplessly objectified and compared on the basis of skin colour, height, and caste identity. Savita keeps getting rejected by most of these alliance raising the bar of stress to her parents.

Nandini Chikte gives an incredibly effective performance as Savita, who is torn between her dreams of pursuing higher education and the pressure to conform to her family’s wishes of an early marriage. Her father, essayed by Taranath Khitekar holds the gravitas with his expressive eyes, showcasing the ordeal he goes through, showcasing his helplessness, the pain is real. They together leave a lasting impression, prompting reflection on themes of tradition, identity, and societal change.

Sthal aims to celebrate the richness of rural Indian culture while questioning outdated societal norms surrounding arranged marriages. It seeks to empower young audiences to pursue their dreams while respecting their roots and heritage.

Sthal is a commendable debut for its director, offering a thought-provoking exploration of arranged marriages in rural India through the lens of a young woman’s journey. The Director leaves us with the awakening blow with its tight slap, sthal comes as a tool for social change.

The film is in competition on the Indian language’s films segment of the Indo-German Film Festival 2024
