KALKI-2898AD – What a Glory!!!

Nag Ashwin does it  and how!!! KALKI is the Big Screen Film you don’t want to miss it. Big B is for a reason called Big B. His Charisma is unmatchable. He is the undoubtedly HERO here. It is the Director Nag Ashwin who dares to vision and bring this to execution. Had a Blast watching it, Indian Cinema only gets better from here.

Kalki set in the dystopian world emerges with the belief from the Vedic Scriptures. The stars will align in 6000 years from the Mahabharata Occurrence and 2898 is the time when these stars are aligning. Whatever that may be, we are lucky to witness the alignment of these cinematic stars that have come our way to be mesmerized by these stories that are global, universal and above all coming from the home ground of our mythology. Nag Ashwin’s writing is magic, the world building is terrific and at ease he introduces to us each one of his key character. Surprising us in between with stellar cameos, making you jump out of your seats seeing them at times. Not giving you names here.

“Save the World” theme was the fashion of the Hollywood films. Indian Cinema takes this leap to the next level. Kalki is set amidst a blend of ancient Indian Hindu mythology and a dystopian society, the tale stretches across ages, showcased well in the opening credits,  commencing with the Mahabharata events in 3102 BC, which herald the onset of the Kali Yuga, and concluding in 2898 AD. At its heart, the story revolves around the advent of Kalki, the mysterious tenth and ultimate avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

The moment you are in, you are IN. Mahabharata Scene where Ashwatthama is cursed and then the opening credits begin to roll. The detailing of these animated credits is something to applaud the makers in few minutes they take you to the journey world has been through until you reach 2898 where they tell you about Kashi being the first and last city of the world. Where no one gives you water for free, introducing you to the world they just begin to develop.

Amitabh Bachchan shines as Ashwatthama, the standout of Kalki. His commanding screen presence is exceptional. Kalki is the celebration of witnessing Amitabh Bachchan perform. It’s a standing ovation performance. Prabhas performs well in his role, although his character deserved a stronger arc. His role could have been a little better, but when one stands in front of Amitabh Bachchan, indeed everything looks small. Nevertheless, he is impressive and good to see the makers retaining his original voice.  It seems the filmmaker has reserved the best for Prabhas in the sequel. His moments in the climax are sure to receive thunderous applause.

Deepika Padukone’s substantial role is the heart of the film, and she delivers a stellar performance, portraying the right emotions. Saswata Chatterjee impresses as the villain. Kamal Haasan excels in his cameo, adding to the anticipation for the next instalment at the magnum. Bujji is great fun too and adds the right spark of the humour.

Kalki turns out to be much better than the poorly dubbed trailer. Disha Patani could have been easily a miss, in the trailer and the film too. A reason for the trailer to score less. Other cameo’s bring us a pleasant surprise and dubbing is decent if not excellent. Santosh Narayanan’s background score is the killer and elevates weak scenes too at times. A crispier editing would have enhanced the watching experience. Yet no complaints, Kalki makes it to the must watch and is not to be missed.

Kalki is the Cinematic Indian Glory and we can’t wait to witness what its universe further brings to us.
