One Truth about Thamar’s 1001 Lies is that the film is a thorough entertainer. Revolving around the dynamics of the relationship’s partners share or say hide. It is indeed how brilliantly the director explores and navigates the lives perspectives through their stories.Content is the king here and Malayalam cinema continues to shine with their storytelling.

Set in Dubai, there is a bunch of friends who gather for a 10th wedding anniversary of their friend. The function is candid with old and new couples gathering to celebrating the day. Before the function takes place, the director through series of small-small events in their lives introduces us to them with their raising conflicts that you can see coming from far. It is the magic of writing that makes you strike the chord with these characters making them relatable instantly. Everyday situations or regular hustles showcased and performed brilliantly.

The writing creates a perfect tempo with the 10th wedding anniversary gift, and you see what’s cooking up but how it is cooked up and served is where they succeed to satiate your entertaining taste buds. The gathering is relatable, and you would feel that we all at some point in our lifetimes have had these experiences. There is one friend who is a lawyer, Vakeel essayed by Sudheesh Scaria, his specialty is he is a divorce lawyer who separates couple amicably instantly. His philosophy of marriage is drawn parallels to a punctured bus, and you must change the bus is stellar. He has got the right traits to showcase the character and he is the one who throws the ball at this gathering. He asks couples to tell their better half a lie that was still hidden by them. Kind of a truth and dare both submerged. Many at the beginning shy away but as when night progresses, we see each one un-layering their hidden truths complicating the dynamics of their relationships or unweaving the webs of their hidden guilts bringing that out in open. Different perspectives are explored here with the notion of raising the question, do couples as they claim really know each other. And will they continue to love each other if they know it all. Different couples, different conflicts one perspective director tries to help land is the understanding. 1001 Lies has a brilliant screenplay keeping it relatable and it ends with one tight slap that makes you leave wondering on what really matters.

There screenplay never gets dull even for one scene, the ambience is rich and vibrant. Director Thamar does a brilliant job with his direction storytelling and writing. The ensemble cast includes Vishnu Agasthya, Vidhya Vijaykumar, Rashmi K Nair, Noufal Rahman, Sajin Ali Pulakkal , Sudeep Koshy and many more. It is Remya Suresh who plays the house help Indu also, who leaves an impressive act with her sheer subtle performance and relatability. Writing of each character, their attributes is the key that makes 1001 Lies work. It continues to keep you intrigued to what’s going to unfold.

The one truth about 1001 Lies is that film is surely an entertainer having its heart at its right place. Not to miss another gem from Malayalam Cinema. The film is in competition on the Indian language’s films segment of the Indo-German Film Festival 2024.
